this is definitely interesting for me, as a music industry major- sad i didnt see it sooner. its funny because my roommate was close to some of the folks that knew him back when and said something about his blowing his advance and stuff, which actually is what so many artists do. i really wished he hadn't- that can be the end of a career because it can mean being forever in debt. well, thats all hear say i guess. but this is certainly an example of an industry professional talking about the future instead of living in the past of the industry, and it is good to see that mr. blackwell had believed he was going about everything correctly. major label dfeals are cool, but as we've seen with a number of folks involved in this niche of the industry (and some of howie's friends- charmar, matty nay), its just not always the answer no matter how much money comes your way. not that it is even the money though- think of the connections and opportunities they probably saw coming- that's is more tremendous and tempting than any amount of money i would think.

honestly, i do still think about this from time to time... i started my music industry degree as a huge fan and believer in howie... and so it is hard to separate my schooling from someone i thought was setting an amazing example of the "indie artist" (ps- check out the dvd "what is indie" by dave cool if you can). i think howie- if he wants to- can come back on a small scale and if he really sticks to his guns (well, i suppose i dunno if his looping type stuff is what he considers to be his style any longer), he can keep his grassroots following and have a longer career through continued performances and recordings on a small scale rather than the flash int he pan stuff of the majors. its sad also because i really thought the music industry was sort of romantic and epic in a way, but the big guys are no longer required and thats been the case for some time. they may help some artists, but i think until you've attained a legendary appeal, its just not necessary to succumb to the damage that can also come from a major label advance and contract.

i work for this online music company that honestly, has more artists that aren't ready than are, but its neat to see how the online world has really eliminated so much of the need to "know someone". that's still there of course, but the abilities to connect and reach people are SO much more available now. and though i'm usually doing other things and not able to listen to all of these artists we have, once in awhile i catch someone who is truly amazing... and all they have is our EPK. and it is so awesome to think that the same way i happened to catch their music, some bigwig industry professional with all the contacts they need might as well. there is just so much available to the DIY artist. i think there was a good period of time where howie was this artist to industry professionals, but they didn't all get that it wouldnt last unless it remained that organic process it was. i mean, he is back and recording at q division (i've asked my coworker for details, but nothing) where he started and i think that is a good sign- these are people that knew him prior to the label stepping in, and can maybe recapture what once was. sorry for the big long post (i've had a glass of wine or two... or three), but all in all, i don't know for sure, but i feel like he is aching for getting what was once his back and that he may be one of the few artists that can do it.
