I would prefer he play an intimate venue, bring in HIS fans, and build his reputation as a great songwriter and musician once again. (Though I understand wanting to expand one's fanbase, even if they're expectations are substandard).
Oh well!

Colbie Caillat? Tell me you're kidding! |

This is rather disappointing news. How can the person who released something as wonderful as Australia be the opener for someone so bland and mediocre? To be
truthful I quickly started losing interest in Howie with the overuse of Collide on TV, and the infamous "cell phone" incident years ago. Nonetheless,
I've been hopeful that the fire I held for this man and his music could one day be reignited.

Why don't you go to a show if one's near you and decide for yourself if you still like the music instead of complaining here? If you don't like
who he's playing with, then don't watch her set.

Regardless of how you feel about Colbie Caillat, the fact is that Howie hasn't done anything for a few years, and she has a popular song on the radio with
Jason Mraz right now. I'm not sure about the whole "expanding fanbase" thing, since a lot of Mraz fans are already fans of Howie. People who are
true fans of guys like Matt Nathanson, Mraz, Howie, or John Mayer seem to like music by all of those guys....not just one. I'm sure that there are
exceptions.
I've never heard Colbie Caillat live, but she could be awesome live. In case you don't know, some folks are better live than in studio. I'm sure that if she's good enough for Mraz...she's good enough for Howie.

Okay... I understand your points... and maybe Colbie is better live... which would be a pleasant surprise. I'm just personally disappointed with the bill.
Now Howie and Mraz would be pretty fantastic. Howie and Matt Nathanson, not so much. It's just an opinion... And in support of my expanding the fanbase
comment: my friends who ADORE Colbie, don't know much about Howie at all, thus he is able to appeal to those who don't already know him... AND expand
the fanbase.
This is a HD discussion board... which is meant for discussion about HD.... which I have started. Didn't mean to make people feel defensive. I love the old Howie and I think WE ALL hope his new stuff is good too. Just trying to stimulate some discussion |

You are more than welcome to discuss your opinion here. Its an open discussion and everyone was expressing their opinions as well. When it comes down to it,
Howie hasn't released an album for 6 years. While it would be great for him to do a tour of just intimate shows for his fans that stuck around thats just
not realistic when he is releasing an album on a major label. There are the fans that have stuck around but there are a lot that need to be reminded of him.
Basically he needs to be rediscovered by the fans who forgot and discovered by new ones if he is going to make it on a major label. Plus, many musicians take
tours that fans are confused about why but in the end it is a great thing. They gain new fans and get more people to appreciate their music as well as the
genre. I know you are not a huge fan of Colbie but like Smanky said give her a chance and if you dont like her then leave the show after Howie's set. The
truth of the matter is is that Colbie is all over the radio right now and is well liked and this tour could open doors for Howie as well as put his music in
the forefront of peoples minds again. Its a good move. You may not like or understand why but this is Howie's career. If you are a true fan you won't
turn your back on him because of who he is touring with and will concentrate on his music and how much you like it. So give it a shot or skip the show
entirely, its up to you.

YES!!! Howie and Matt were great together.
ek...I was just stating my opinion, just like you were. This IS a Howie forum, but you made this topic about Colbie Caillat when you put her name in your subject line. I've seen Howie play with everyone from Tori Amos and Ben Folds to Dave Matthews and OAR. I've generally gone to most of those shows for Howie above anyone else (DMB took priority in the case of that one). I could care less about Colbie, honestly, but I don't automatically hit next when she pops up on my iPod. However, it's a fact that she's had a top ten album and top ten songs on iTunes for months within the last year or so, while Howie has been out taking care of himself. The more popular artist in whatever cities marketing area is pretty much always the headliner. From city to city, sometimes the artists flip-flop based on record sales in that area. I do happen to think that Colbie would be a good opener for a Jack Johnson set, though. I'm very happy for Howie and his success, but I also miss the old days, before "Collide", when most of the people at his shows were really into everything that he was playing, instead of just waiting for one song. Call me selfish, but some of us feel like he was ours first. I don't care if Howie is opening for Barry Manilow...if the tour comes anywhere close to my neck of the woods, I'm there. I've waited around for so long that I'm just glad that shows are starting up again at all.

I don't know anything about Colbie Caillat, I was just saying go to a show if you before passing judgement on either, and if you don't like it, then
you know.

eK32 wrote: I kind of know what you mean, I've been a fan of Howie's for a loooong time (2002), and the whole debacle with the cell phone, and the re-hab threw me(also the Britney), but I stuck around and waited for him to come around again, because I have such fond memories of his shows and listening to his music before things got weird. I do, however, know what you mean about touring with Colbie, from what I've experienced with her music is, yes it's kind of bland, she had one hit and I didn't even know that she was working with Mraz(don't get me started on him. Okay, let's! I'm so disappointed that he's playing HUGE ASS venues now, it's so impersonal and disconcerting, especially if you're a fan from way back when he was playing hole in the wall places! Ugh!), but I'm willing to give her the benefit of the doubt. Or, I'll stick around for a bit of her set, then go and try and find Howie down by the merch table. *g* which I doubt he'll be doing, because he's not Matt Nathanson! Yes, I'm a Matt Nathanson fan too! Oh, hated that Collide got huge play on TV too! Why, because then his shows were inundated with teenage girls who I clearly recall saying in the line to the venue "I only know Collide, I'm not a big music fan!" waiting for the "tee-hee!" right? Also, said teenage girls would not stop screaming during shows, lovely for us long time fans. |

Whew! Someone who kinda gets what I'm saying. I've been listening to Howie since my Freshman year in college (2001) --- haha... when did I become old.
I saw him perform at a bar in Portland some years after and was blown away. He was opening for Gavin DeGraw (who by the way, put on a FANTASTIC show... way
better than his CDs). Point is... there were few screaming "woo" girls, who as stated before only knew Collide (Collide had just hit the radio and
hadn't been overplayed yet). It was a fabulous show. I'm a big fan of the small venues. If anyone out there only goes to bigger arena shows, please do
yourself a favor and hit some of your smaller intimate venues even if it's from local bands in your area! I've said enough for Colbie - but let me add
that I did check out some of her other songs online and on youtube and stand by my opinion.. some might say pleasant... I tend to think "bland" is a
more apt description. Just sayin
I would like to hear your rant on Mraz - I like some of his stuff and assume he might be cool live. I saw Matt Nathanson at an in store. One of the nicest, most hillarious persons I've seen, just not entirely keen on his voice.... But to each his/her own |

I like Colbie Caillat. She isn't on my favorits. I just purchased tickets to the concert in Columbus, Ohio. So hopefully she is good in person because it
almost a 4 hour drive from where I live.

Thanks for the "rant." And actually, I haven't heard any of Mraz's new stuff... But maybe I should pick up his twitter page and get myself
all philosophized!
Caught Howie/Degraw was in Portland, Oregon at a club called Barracuda (It was a radio station show). Not the greatest venue, but they definitely made the most of it! |

I was disappointed too to finally see tour dates, only to discover Colbie being the "headliner". I wish Howie was doing his own show.

Umm...I'm with you ladies. I was a bit surprised to see HD opening for CC. Might not have been as peculiar if she were opening for him. I don't mind
hanging around to check out her live effort but what I'm really upset about is that HD seems to be playing only 4 or 5 songs. What's up with that?!!
That's like eating only one potato chip!
Best show I have seen was Missy Higgins opening for HD in a small venue in Atlantic City. Never forget it. |

I'm not sure what's so surprising. Caillat's first album back around '06-07 was HUGE and her latest album has garnered a ton of attention as
well. Howie's last album prior to Sound The Alarm was about 6 years ago (!!!), and until 'Collide' finally caught on quite awhile after the album
was released, he really didn't have that much success with that album. He's been out of the spotlight for years, and until the recent EP came out, we
basically had no news on Howie or his whereabouts for quite awhile. No official website, nothing. Sound The Alarm hasn't received much attention at all,
nor has it been promoted as heavily as I'd have hoped. At the same time, I didn't anticipate the record company spending much to market this album as
he's been out of the spotlight for quite awhile, and while some still remember him for his hit 'Collide', seemingly just as many remember him for
his arrests and rehab stint. Hopefully Howie will regain his old form in the future and become the big headliner he once was, unfortunately I don't believe
Sound The Alarm is strong enough an album to take him there.

Well, I disagree with only one part of that, I think Sound The Alarm is strong enough, ceartinly doesn't leave my home or car stereo, and it will stay
there for quite a while... I think a proper media campaign would be very succesful, but I fear it won't happen...

I agree with you Magnus. I love Sound the Alarm. I know here in Indiana I never hear Be There or anything about Howie on the radio.
